Believe it or not, this city used to be a tiny village that spanned no more than two blocks away in any direction from the courthouse square. It was named for General Nathanael Greene—a leader in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Many schools, buildings, and streets throughout Greensboro still have General Greene's name on them.
